QBSN Athlete of the Week: Kellen Jones

This week’s QBSN Athlete of the Week honors are awarded to Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) of Quinnipiac University’s men’s ice hockey team.

(QU Chronicle)
The freshman forward, and top recruit for the Bobcats this year, had a career day this past weekend, putting on a show for the 3,891 fans packed into the TD Bank Sports Center, a non-conference opponent attendance record. Jones netted two goals on the afternoon against Holy Cross; his first two goals of his collegiate career. The Bobcats wound up winning the game 3-1. The other goal came from junior forward Spencer Heichman (Yorba Linda, Calif.), his second of the season.

With his two goals, Jones jumps up to tie Heichman for the team lead in goals with two, and is now in sole possession of the team lead in points with five. Second on the team in points is Kellen’s twin brother, Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia), who has four points on the year.

In the offseason, Kellen Jones was drafted in the 7th round of the NHL Amateur Draft by the Edmonton Oilers. Jones passed on the opportunity to sign with the Oilers, and instead opted to come to Quinnipiac and play alongside his brother, whom he has played with his entire life.

The win over Holy Cross for the Bobcats improved their record to 3-1 on the year, as they now embark on a six game road trip. Next up for Quinnipiac is a two game set this Friday and Saturday night against No. 17 St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minn. The Huskies are 2-3-1 on the year, but remain the highest ranked opponent that the Bobcats have played so far this season. Quinnipiac’s next home game falls on Nov. 19th, when they play host to the Dartmouth College Big Green. That game will be broadcasted live here on the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network.

QBSN Athlete of the Week: Regan Boulton

This week’s QBSN Athlete of the Week is presented to Regan Boulton (Brandon, Manitoba) of Quinnipiac University’s women’s ice hockey team.

The sophomore defender had a career week up in Orono, Maine this past weekend for the Bobcats. Boulton tallied five points against the Blackbears of the University of Maine, as the Bobcats split the weekend series, winning Friday night, and losing Saturday afternoon. Friday night was a career night for Boulton, as she recorded her first career hat trick, netting three goals past Maine goaltender Candice Currier (Goffstown, N.H.). Along with her hat trick, Boulton also had an assist on a goal scored by freshman forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario).

Friday night produced Boulton’s largest point total in a game ever, with four points recorded. Her previous high point total for a night came back on February 20, 2010, when she recorded two assists in an 8-1 Bobcats win over Brown University.
(QU Chronicle)

Boulton was not done producing for the Bobcats after Friday night in Maine. She came out on Saturday and got another assist on a goal scored by junior defender Bethany Dymarczyk (Hamden, Conn.). The assist gave her five points for her career weekend.

The monster weekend improved Boulton’s stats for the year to four goals and four assists. Those numbers place Boulton third on the team in goals scored, assists, and overall points tallied. Boulton also leads all Quinnipiac defenders on the team in goals.

Thanks to her play, Boulton was awarded the ECAC Hockey/MLX Skates Player of the Week, her first ECAC Hockey recognized award of the season.

Boulton and the Bobcats takes on #7 Boston College next, this Friday night at 5 p.m. at the TD Bank Sports Center. The game will be broadcasted live here on the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network, with Brian Farrell and Nick Sczerbinski on the call.

Following the game, make sure to stay up at the TD Bank Sports Center to help the school celebrate Quinnipiac’s Midnight Madness, a palatial pep rally for all Quinnipiac athletic teams held in the basketball arena at the Bank.

The freshman forward Uden Johansson had a career week as she helped improve the Bobcats record to 4-0 on the year. In only her second collegiate week, Uden Johansson tallied four goals and one assist, with three of those goals coming in the form of a hat trick against Sacred Heart University Sunday at the TD Bank Sports Center. She also had a goal and an assist Friday, when the Bobcats took down The Northeastern Huskies.

With her impressive week, Uden Johansson took the team lead in goals with five, and tied for second on the team in assists with three. Only fellow freshman sensation Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) has more assists and total points then Uden Johansson, with six assists and ten points.

In addition to winning QBSN Athlete of the Week honors, Uden Johansson was paramount in Quinnipiac sweeping all of the ECAC Hockey/MLX Skates awards for the second straight week. Uden Johansson was awarded both the ECAC Hockey/MLX Skates Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors. With sophomore Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) winning her second straight Goaltender of the Week honors, the Bobcats continued their ECAC Hockey award dominance.

This Friday, the Bobcats travel up to the Harold Alfond Sports Arena in Orono, Me. to take on the University of Maine Blackbears. Quinnipiac and Maine will face off Saturday afternoon as well, before the Bobcats travel back home for a four game home stand at the TD Bank Sports Center. All Bobcats home games will be broadcasted live here on the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network.

Thanks!

From all of us at QBSN, we thank all who helped out with Friday's insane amount of activities. Three broadcasts in one day in not the easiest of tasks, especially if one of them is a first of its kind (like the Winter Season Kickoff was).

So, again, thanks go out to the Athletic Director Jack McDonald, Athletics as a whole, Sports Information, Griff's Chicken Shack, Eric Grgurich, Lila Carney, Nicole Pappas, Jess Abreu, and so many others who helped out even a little. Today was a great success, in large part because of everyone behind the scenes.

Thank you, and we hope to have another day like it soon!

Athlete of the Week: Kelly Babstock

QBSN Athlete of the Week: Kelly Babstock

This week’s athlete of the week honors belong to Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) of Quinnipiac University’s women’s ice hockey team.

The freshman forward was lights out this past weekend in her first collegiate games, when the Bobcats traveled to upstate New York to face on the Niagara University Purple Eagles. Babstock recorded a goal and an assist in the Friday game; a 3-0 Quinnipiac victory. She followed up her impressive collegiate debut with another goal and two assists in the Saturday game; a 3-1 Quinnipiac victory.

In addition to QBSN Athlete of the Week honors, Babstock was awarded ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week. The Bobcats wound up sweeping all of the ECAC Hockey awards for the week, as junior Kate Wheeler (Oakville, Ontario) won Player of the Week, and sophomore Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) won Goaltender of the Week.

The sweep of Niagara gets the Bobcats off to an impressive 2-0 start; in a season where expectations for the team are at an all time high. Quinnipiac returns home for their first home weekend of the season, as they take on Northeastern University at the TD Bank Sports Center Saturday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m., and Sacred Heart University Sunday, Oct. 10 at 5 p.m..

Both games will be broadcasted on the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network, as Brian Farrell and Peter Rossi have the call Saturday, with Brian Farrell and Nick Palumbo on the call for Sunday.

QBSN Athlete of the Week: Juliet Labarthe

This week’s QBSN athlete of the week honors are rewarded to Juliet LaBarthe (Oklahoma City, Okla.) of Quinnipiac University’s women’s tennis team.

LaBarthe, a freshman sensation for the Bobcats, has gotten off to a very impressive start to her collegiate career. Last week at the West Point Eastern Tennis Invitational, Labarthe won her first three matches to advance to the Class C singles championship match, where she lost. In all of LaBarthe’s wins, she defeated her opponents in straight sets.

Going into the West Point Eastern Tennis Invitational, LaBarthe was 10-1 in her first 11 collegiate matches. Her loss in the latest championship match ended her streak of seven consecutive matches won.

Labarthe earned the NEC Player of the Week honors also, thanks to her performance at West Point. This was awarded to LaBarthe in conjunction with her third straight NEC Rookie of the Week honors.

The Bobcats get a bit of a breather in the month of October, as their next matchup comes October 20th, when Quinnipiac travels to Storrs, Conn. to take on the University of Connecticut.
