QBSN Athlete of the Week: Furtuna Velaj

This week’s QBSN athlete of the week honors are presented to Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) of Quinnipiac University’s women’s soccer team.

The junior forward accounted for all 3 goals against Dartmouth College on Sept. 17, leading to a 3-1 out of conference win for the Bobcats; their first of the year. Velaj’s hat trick was her fourth of her impressive collegiate career. She also contributed seven shots, five on goal in the contest.

Velaj also earned the Adidas/Northeast Conference Player of the Week honors for the fourth time in her career, sharing the honor with Central Connecticut’s Beth Lloyd. Velaj also contributed four shots, two on goal in the Bobcats latest matchup against Rhode Island.

Last year, Velaj recorded 11 goals to go along with eight assists to lead the Bobcats in both categories. The closest Bobcat to Velaj in those categories was then-freshman Jillian Strassner (Avon, Conn.), recording four goals and three assists.

The Bobcats two game winning streak this week improved their overall season record to 2-4. Their next game is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 26 against NEC rivals Central Connecticut State here at Quinnipiac. That game kicks off the Bobcats conference play, and will be broadcasted on the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network live at 12:00 p.m. with Miles T. McQuiggan and Nick Dench on the call.

QBSN Athlete of the Week: Kimberly Cunniff

This week’s QBSN athlete of the week honors belong to Kimberly Cunniff (Walpole, Mass) of Quinnipiac University’s field hockey team.

The junior defense played a huge role in the Bobcats latest win, a 2-1 victory over Colgate. Cunniff scored the game winning goal in the 60th min off of an assist from senior captain Tina Watkins (Sweet Valley, Pa.). Her goal capped off an exciting comeback effort for the Bobcats. The win ended a three game losing streak for Quinnipiac, and improves their record for the year to 2-3.

Cunniff’s goal was her first of the season, after being tied for tied for the team lead in goals last season with four. She also had four shots, with two of them being on goal in the contest.

The Bobcats travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. this weekend to take on #19 Albany and the University of Michigan. Quinnipiac does not begin conference play until October 10, when they travel to Fairfield, Conn. to take on their NEC rivals Sacred Heart.

Welcome to the New Era

This is the start of a new chapter in sports broadcasting at Quinnipiac University. Starting with our first meeting on Wednesday, September 1st at 9:30 pm, the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network will officially hit the ground running as its own entity.

For those who wish to continue the same sports broadcasting practices as years past (when we were a part of the radio station, WQAQ), do not fret; we will be running things very similarly. For those who have just found our organization: we welcome you to join us in our inaugural year, a true milestone in Quinnipiac student media history.

This blog will be home to the many beat reports by our department, something that the once “sports department of the radio station” takes pride in. As we branch out to become out own organization, we will continue to keep track of the local athletics on campus by way of the virtual page.

But, as always, what we truly take pride in is the ability to broadcast nearly each sport that Quinnipiac University has to offer, and we will continue to follow through in that regard thanks to our incredibly loyal and talented personnel. Field hockey, men’s basketball, women’s lacrosse, and much more will be brought to you by passionate journalism students of QU who wish to get real-life experience in their collegiate environment.

So, in conclusion, we hope you find the time to listen to the streams (which will be available on our web site, qbsn.org) and also read the great entries to this blog. Just remember: whichever medium you choose to entertain yourself with, or (if you are an interested student) help us report in, you will be part of a new era in Quinnipiac history.

Let the games begin!
