This week’s QBSN Athlete of the Week honors are awarded to senior Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, NY) of the Quinnipiac Field Hockey team. This is her second time receiving this award this season.
Over the course of this young season, the senior goaltender has been outstanding between the pipes for the Bobcats. Lewis broke her career record which was set against Yale on Sept. 4, when she blocked 19 shots.
Lewis had a career day against nationally ranked Maine’s high powered attack, as she recorded her fourth double-digit save of the season, stopping a career-high 20 shots. Lewis stopped 10 shots in each half including one of two shots she saw in overtime. Lewis made multiple diving saves, allowing three goals on 28 shot attempts. She only allowed one goal on 16 corners taken by the Black Bears.
Lewis surpassed her career goals saving record and was proud of her accomplishment knowing that it came against a nationally ranked team.
“It’s crazy,” Lewis said. “I have never had twenty saves in one game in my life. I feel like that’s unheard of, and to do it against a nationally ranked team and to play like that its crazy.”
Quinnipiac head coach Becca Main Kohli praised Lewis after the game about her stellar performance.
“Nicole has had a stellar year for us,” Main Kohli said. “When goalies are in the zone, I don’t speak to them for two and a half months, so I haven’t spoken to Nicole, but today was the first day where I said listen, you did your job.”
Main Kohli was also pleased with the way Lewis prepared for Maine’s potent attack.
“Nicole is a very intelligent person and player and she scouted the game yesterday and she knew everything she was going to see,” Main Kohli said. “That is why she made some amazing saves. It wasn’t luck or being in the right spot, it was that she scouted correctly and did a fantastic job bringing it to her physical presence today.”
Lewis has now recorded 91 saves on the year.
The Bobcats know they can count on Lewis between the pipes, as they try to make their run toward the Northeast Conference Championship.
