Bobcats taken down in overtime

Coming off a particularly aggressive game Friday night, the Quinnipiac men’s hockey team returned to TD Bank Sports Center to take on St. Lawrence. After a scoreless three periods St. Lawrence finally stole the game in overtime, winning 1-0.
It was a game of missed opportunities for both teams. St. Lawrence had six power-play chances and Quinnipiac had five, yet neither team was able to capitalize on a single one.
Throughout the game Quinnipiac set up numerous skillful plays, but struggled to find the net. The crowd was kept on edge as several times it appeared the Bobcats would nab the first goal. The puck hit posts, players, and sticks, but never met the back of the net.
Just over two minutes into overtime, St. Lawrence forward Kyle Flanagan whipped the puck around the post past Quinnipiac junior goalie Eric Hartzell’s (White Bear Lake, Minn.) reaching hands. The play immediately went under review, but the goal was confirmed shortly after.
Coach Rand Pecknold reflected on the missed opportunities post-game.
“Tonight was frustrating just in that it was right there in front of us, and we just didn’t have enough to go get it,” said Pecknold.
Had the Bobcats taken advantage of any of the five power-plays this game might have ended differently.
“You get an early power-play, you can put a team away. Both Friday night and tonight we were lackluster in our plays,” said Pecknold.
Despite being defeated, Quinnipiac outshot St. Lawrence 33 to 23. Hartzell stopped every shot throughout regulation play before letting the lone goal slip past in overtime.
With this loss, the Bobcats drop to 7-4-2 overall and 1-2-2 in ECAC play. St. Lawrence’s third straight win lifts them 3-5-0 overall.
Quinnipiac hits the road next weekend to take on Colgate Friday Nov. 18, and then face Cornell Saturday Nov. 19.
