Women rebound strong against Colgate

The Quinnipiac Women’s Ice Hockey Team (14-9-2, 10-4-2 ECAC) rebounded after a disappointing loss last night to Cornell by defeating the Colgate Raiders (8-14-1, 3-8-1 ECAC) 4-1 Saturday afternoon and getting two big ECAC points.

The Bobcats got things going early on and never looked back. They took advantage of their first power play of the afternoon as sophomore Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) dished the puck to an open Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden) who then fired it to an open Regan Boulton (Brandon, Manitoba) at the point. Boulton fired the shot from the point right past the shoulder of Colgate goalie Kimberly Sass.

At the 15:03 mark of the period, Johansson collected a tricky pass from freshman Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) in the slot and fired home her fourth goal of the season to put the Bobcats up 2-0. It was Kosta’s 14th assist of the season, trailing closely to Babstock, who had 16 assists on the season. Just under two minutes later, at the 16:52 mark of the first, Freshman Morgan Fritz-Ward (Mason City, Iowa) got her first NCAA goal and first as a Bobcat off of a great individual effort. She dove for a deflected puck, left her feet, and swiped the puck past Sass to put the Bobcats to the locker room up 3-0. Senior captain and defender Jordan Elkins (Wasilla, Alaska) was credited with her second assist of the season, while sophomore forward Amanda Colin (Burnsville, Minn.) earned her fifth helper of the year.

At the start of the second, Colgate looked for a change of pace and Sass was replaced in net by goalie Susan Allen. Things seemed to work as Colgate got on the board at the 8:58 mark of the second period junior forward Brittany Phillips' power-play goal but Colgate would be held scoreless for the rest of the period thanks to tight Quinnipiac defense. The second period would end with Quinnipiac up 3-1.

The Bobcats and freshman net minder Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minn.) entered the third determined to not let this one get away and they did not disappoint. Boulton added her second goal of the game on a rocket of a shot from the top of the face-off circle to increase Quinnipiac's lead to 4-1 at the 4:15 mark into the third period of play thanks to being wide open at the point due to four-on-four play. Kosta received her second assist of the night on the play.

Overall, Quinnipiac was whistled for five penalties in the contest, while Colgate was called for six infractions. The Bobcats went 1-for-6 on its extra skater opportunities and the Raiders were 1-for-4 on its chances.

Quinnipiac, which is idle next weekend, returns to action in two weeks time when it hosts Syracuse University on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center.
