Athlete of the Week: Felicia Barron

Athlete of the Week: Felicia Barron

As far as Quinnipiac basketball is concerned, Springfield, Mass. has produced two gems for the program – Felicia Barron and the sport itself.

The reigning QBSN Athlete of the Week of the women’s basketball team has earned herself the honor for the second week in a row.  Barron’s tremendous effort helped hoist the Bobcats to two victories over Northeast Conference opponents.  She was also named the Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season.

This recognition is well deserved.  In the two games against Wagner and Mount St. Mary’s on Jan. 28 and 30 respectively, Barron racked up 36 points, 10 steals and five rebounds.

While her game-to-game performance is proof enough of Barron’s season-long dominance, she has maintained this at a national level.  Barron is quite literally stealing the show as she sits on top of the NCAA, averaging 4.6 steals per game.  She has an unprecedented total of 96 in just 21 games.

“I know defense is our key for us to win games,” Barron said after the win over Wagner.

In spite of defense being the cornerstone of Barron’s season successes, she leads the team with an average of 17.6 points per game.  Freshman Jasmine Martin sits at a distant second, averaging 11.0 per game.

As if all of these accomplishments weren’t enough to thrust Barron into the spotlight, she has managed all of this success on a team that has absolutely exploded this season.  The Bobcats have won six straight games to boost their overall record to 16-5 and 8-2 in the NEC.

Quinnipiac now faces three games in a row on the road at Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson and Central Conn. State which should test its impeccable 9-1 record away from the TD Bank Sports Center.
