QBSN: James Johnson

QBSN Athlete of the Week: James Johnson

This week’s QBSN Athlete of the Week honors are awarded to James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.) of Quinnipiac University’s men’s basketball team.

Johnson, a junior guard, continued his outstanding play this past week, helping the Bobcats recover from a tough home loss against the University of Massachussets to win two straight home games against Mount St. Mary’s and Lehigh. Johnson tallied 25 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals, along with 5 threes in the game. Johnson shined in the latter stages of the game, where he scored 8 points in the final minute of the game.

Johnson hit two major, three pointers, including one that tied up the game with 28 seconds left. Then, with the game tied at 75 and the Bobcats needing a stop, Johnson stole the ball away from Julian Norfleet of the Mountaineers with 5 seconds remaining and hit a game winning layup as time expired to give the Bobcats their first conference win of the season.

Against Lehigh on last Tuesday night, Johnson put up 18 points, with 6 assists, 3 rebounds, and another 4 steals. Johnson’s leadership helped the Bobcats win their second game in a row with a 84-78 victory, improving Quinnipiac’s overall record on the year to 6-2, 1-0 in the NEC.

On the year, Johnson is averaging 18.3 points, 5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 2.1 steals. Johnson entered the year as one of the top players in the NEC, with many publications listing him, along with senior forward Justin Rutty (Newburgh, N.Y.) as the best guard – forward combo in the league. Johnson averaged 12.1 points, along with 4 assists and 3 rebounds last season for the Bobcats.

Quinnipiac ends their five game home stand this Saturday, when they take on the University of Rhode Island Rams at the TD Bank Sports Center at 3 p.m. The Rams are 6-3 on the season, coming off of a 79-63 win over Northeastern University. All the action can be caught right here on the Quinnipiac Bobcats Sports Network.
